Voyages: Utopias

Utopia, Friedensohn wrote, is not within our purview, no matter how we may long for it.  In a series of paintings inspired by a 1973 visit to Crete, he focused on hippies liberated from the rat race. Youthful, well bronzed, polyglot, and at home in nature, his subjects played at being gods. How tempting to share their dream! Or, to dismiss it as an imitation Club Med on someone else’s land.
