The Art of Elias Friedensohn

Voyages: Tunisia

After a nine month stay in Tunis (1978–79), Friedensohn appreciated both the recurrent past in the present and the drama of his outsidership. Hard-working Tunisian country women fetch water, carry wood, wash family garments, and stoically endure rituals much like their great grandmothers’. In markets and souks, the artist studies urban women and men as they shop, wait, gossip, and bargain.
