Satiric Watercolors: Plagues

The ten plagues, inflicted by Pharaoh and marking the end of the Jews' sojourn in Egypt, were terrifying events. Friedensohn's watercolors—of Blood, Locusts, Darkness, and Slaying of the First Born among others—are especially fierce. Using flattened, symbolic forms—some brightly painted, the artist conveys depravity, victimization and extreme suffering.
